A note on the type
The original album's font was custom calligraphy so I did the only thing that could be done: I approximated the letters, with help from this, and drew them. That's why the back cover looks so ugly, because I didn't expect it'd be bigger crylaugh. This is why I should look things up before committing to the bit
Morning is taken from this Shacklewild poem.
background noise
Honestly just six songs that get my hackles up about love&loyalty and two songs that are special to me. I don't think you can know Shackles fully without knowing Frank, and I don't think Frank is complete without Shackles, and that kind of relationship fucks me up man. I'm talking about Frankie's custom photo of Shackles! I'm talking about raising a glass to him years after he's dead! I'm talking about their being goddamn buried side by side! A leader and his complete opposite second in command who complement each other makes me knees weak.
This is a happy playlist i.e. I will Not be taking any questions about Quest or what happens after that at this time, thank you. Endurance and then The End.
Any order but I think South Georgia should come last!
thank you for the music
You're walking away with my heart and my soul
I can feel you even when I'm alone
I reject your insinuation that I picked this song solely for the 'come to me, come to me wild and wild' pun. I simply think that our dead polar explorers deserve upbeat bangers of love songs too!!!! Also many lines in this song taken out of context remind me of Endurance loops and I enjoy that. Yes ok the Wild pun is one of them. (Shackles will come to him ;--------;)
There's your horizon to chase
So go far beyond where we stand
No matter the distance, I'm holding your hand
Another song about Endurance loops :crylaugh: What can I say, I just think Sabs' loopfic (I shan't link it here, since this is public, but you know where to find or ask!!) covered every single one of my thoughts about Shacklewild. Shackles will always be chasing the horizon, Wild will always be there looping for him (..?), the light guiding him home. And they always come home…! Thinks about Grytviken too much, dissociates
And you can no longer see
Let my love throw a spark
And have a little faith in me
So what I'm realising as I type this out is you actually just have to go and read Endurance loops to understand the Shacklewild dynamic. Sab did it better than I or any song could do it!! Shakes fist!!
I think what fucks me up about this class of song of, like, faith and believing, is it works both ways, but very differently. It's very obvious in the context of loops, but also really putting Wild in charge of Elephant Island, of the faith that Shackles puts in Frank. And of course from biscuit incident and Everything Else About Him that Frank's faith in Shackles is absolute. But unlike Billcon, one of them's got to go on without the other, and so that faith is… well. It hits worse. Hits like drifting across a continent for years with only your faith to keep you company :crylaugh:
And far from home
You're never alone, you know
HOWEVER, putting faith in a dead person also means an endless number of ghost possibilities!!! Frank having a drink with Shackles every year just. Knife to heart. He believed that Shackles knew what he was doing… he was never alone!!
PS yes this is a very personal playlist maker's privilege pick, but also consider "Funny how a photograph / Can take you back in time / To places and embraces / That you thought you'd left behind" in the context of Frank's Shackle photo :)
We'd help each other stay in stride
But each lover's steps fall so differently
But I'll wait for you, and if I should fall behind wait for me
Alas, I have to resort to youtube for this song. The music video version is FAR SUPERIOR and I don't know why you wouldn't let me put it in my silly little playlist! Bruce! Don't let the grandparents without spotify still win!
From one boss to another hehe one of my favourite Springsteen songs, largely due to aforementioned music video. (I've tried to find the closest I can for the actual playlist, but because they mostly do the rotating singing on live tracks you also get audience noise and such). Anyway I don't suppose I have to explain this one. They said they'd walk together man.
Lost in their overcoats, waiting for the sunset
Ok we're deviating slowly from the love&loyalty segment and into more oblique stuff. Tis funny because Wild never even hit 70 (tis not funny) but I just… I have a lot of feelings about if they were allowed to grow old together yknow? I mean. I don't know if it would have gone well, but they would have had each other to share that park bench quietly.
& now the two personal instrumental songs! I first heard the original classical version of this song, written by Elgar, at IWM Duxford (a war aviation museum I am a nerd and not a fun one at that) ten years ago. It was played near the end of an exhibition in memory of airmen who lost their lives, it was my first visit to the UK and my dream museums, I was an emotional wreck. It's still played on remembrance days and at funerals and things like that, and I've always associated it with grief and sadness and loss but also the memory of something beyond that, something greater… like Elgar's original variations were written for his friends, so it's a sad song, but it's also not a sad song, you know, it's also like a tribute, a dedication despite? Waves hands helplessly. It's like a momentous, idk, closing of the fist. Like Tennyson's Ulysses??? This is what I mean by personal it's impossibl to explain
ANYWAY. All this to say this is what my unwell brain associates with post-Quest Shacklewild. He were with him still. And I picked this version from the Dunkirk soundtrack bc 1. I love this version. I loved the movie. Sue me 2. I love that they renamed it Variation 15, one after the original 14, as a sort of continuation of that idea of tribute, 3. I love that you don't see the original name on the playlist so that it hopefully whumps you, if you do know it, when you hear it, Elgar's Nimrod.
Noffink to say on this one except please listen to the entirety of the Adam Young Endurance album, it is excellent and makes me bawl. I put this at the end because ultimately I think that's what Shacklewild is to me: not the pain of Quest, not the still getting to know each other of Discovery and Nimrod, but the words that end this song - thus we went along, and thus we returned - two men seeing each other across the sea, all well.
All american rejects
I also started this playlist before I thought to keep notes, so I don't remember what I cut but I think there were some songs that intersected with Billcon, lmfao. What can I say… I love ride and literally dies
two - morning || two - will you join the dance?
three - crevasse || three - we die, but we don't
four - ...antics || four - unknown continents || four - going to the match || four - in that final flowing cold
five - dead and gone
